If you're going to be traveling without your dog during the holidays, you'll want to make sure they're well-cared for while you're away. If you can avoid it, you shouldn't leave your dog at home alone, even if it's just going to be for a couple of days. You never know when plans are going to change, which could leave your dog at home alone for longer than you'd expected. For instance, bad weather could roll in and delay your flight for a few days. To make sure your dog is safe and well-cared for during your holiday travels, you should check them into a boarding facility. Once you've decided on the boarding facility, you'll need to take the following four steps to make sure your dog has a pleasant stay.

Start with a Check-Up

If you're going to be checking your dog into a boarding facility this holiday season, start with a check-up. This is important, even if your dog isn't experiencing any health concerns. During the check-up, your vet will ensure that your dog is up-to-date on its vaccinations, and that it isn't showing any signs of illness. If your dog hasn't been micro-chipped yet, now's the perfect time to take care of that. You never know when your dog might decide to break out of the boarding facility. A micro-chip will help identify your dog once it's located.

Prepare the Prescriptions

If your dog does suffer from medical issues, and it takes medication for them, you'll need to prepare the prescriptions. First, make sure your dog has sufficient medication to last throughout its stay at the boarding facility. Second, make sure that the prescriptions are in their original containers, and that the veterinarians name is clearly identifiable on the label. This will ensure that the boarding facility knows exactly what medication your dog is taking, and how to contact the vet should a problem arise.

Give Your Dog a Flea Treatment

If your dog is going to be housed with other dogs, you'll want to give it a flea treatment before you drop it off. The last thing you want is to bring your dog home with a raging flea infestation. Giving your dog a thorough flea treatment before you leave for the holidays, will ensure that you don't get any unwelcome visitors upon your return.

Bring the Proper Gear

If your dog is going to go out for exercise while it's in the boarding facility, you'll need to pack the proper gear. Be sure to bring your dogs leash so that it can go out for walks. If it's cold where your dog will be staying, you should pack a sweater for it, as well.
